Songwriting I offers a guided introduction to the creative and analytical skills essential for writing original songs. Students begin by exploring the fundamental elements of songwriting like lyrics, melody, harmony. and developing critical-listening habits through the study of song form and structure. The course traces both classic and contemporary forms, from strophic and AABA designs to verse–chorus frameworks and additional sections such as bridges, intros, and pre-choruses. Learners experiment with strategies for beginning a song, drawing inspiration, and shaping mood through tempo, tonality, groove, and dynamics. A substantial portion of the class focuses on melody writing, including motivic development, phrasing, question-and-answer patterns, and the use of contrast and space. Additional creative tools such as hooks, riffs, and solos expand students’ expressive range, while discussions on complexity and harmonic pacing deepen their understanding of structure and impact. By studying and emulating successful songs, students learn to draw productive inspiration from existing works while developing their own artistic voices. The quarter culminates in a workshop and presentation of original final projects, giving students the opportunity to refine and showcase their songwriting craft.
