California College of Music’s Make A Record program equips students with the creative, technical, and collaborative skills essential for writing, producing, and releasing a professional EP in today’s music industry.

MAKE A RECORD 

Make A Record is a 10-week intensive program at California College of Music designed for artists, songwriters, and producers who are ready to create and release a professional EP.

In this focused, hands-on certificate, students move through the complete creative process — from songwriting and lyric development to music production, studio recording, and final project completion.

Freestyle

Over the course of 10 weeks, you will:

 

​• Develop strong songwriting fundamentals and structure

• Refine lyrical voice and storytelling techniques

• Gain essential music production and DAW skills

• Record in a professional studio environment

• Collaborate with other writers and musicians

• Produce and complete a song or EP.

Learning Outcomes

 

​Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Compose original songs using contemporary song structure and melodic development techniques.

  2. Craft effective lyrics that demonstrate clarity, storytelling, and artistic voice.

  3. Demonstrate foundational proficiency in music production software and recording workflows.

  4. Record and edit audio in a professional studio environment.

  5. Collaborate effectively in co-writing and production settings.

  6. Produce and finalize a multi-song EP that demonstrates artistic cohesion and technical competence.

  7. Present completed work in a professional portfolio format suitable for release or further academic advancement.

10-Week Intensive Curriculum  (12 Credits)

M170A – Intro to Songwriting (2 Credits)

Foundations of contemporary song structure, melody writing, harmonic development, and creative workflow.

M171A – Intro to Lyric Writing (1 Credit)

Lyric craft, storytelling techniques, rhyme schemes, imagery, and developing an authentic artistic voice.

M131A – Music Technology I (2 Credits)

Introduction to DAWs, MIDI sequencing, audio recording, editing, and modern music production fundamentals.

M137B – Studio Recording Sessions (2 Credits)

Hands-on studio experience recording vocals and instruments in a professional recording environment.

M172 – Collaborative Songwriting (2 Credits)

Co-writing techniques, creative communication, group workflow, and writing for different artistic styles.

M179 – Making Your EP (3 Credits)

Capstone course focused on producing, refining, sequencing, and completing a cohesive multi-song EP.
